8 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb Package

The 8 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb is one of the most scenic and well-paced ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The route approaches the mountain from the western side and passes through several different ecological zones before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

With an additional day compared with the 7-day itinerary, this route allows for a more gradual pace and better acclimatization. You will have time to enjoy the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley and the spectacular high-altitude landscape before the summit attempt.

8 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi – Lemosho Gate – Big Tree Camp

Elevation: Approximately 2,100 m – 2,780 m
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

Your guide and trekking team will pick you up from your hotel in Moshi and drive toward Lemosho Gate.

After completing park registration and other formalities, begin your hike through the beautiful Kilimanjaro rainforest.

The trail is surrounded by tall trees, ferns and lush vegetation. The first day is relatively short, allowing you to settle into the mountain environment.

Continue gradually uphill until you reach Big Tree Camp, where your trekking crew will prepare your tent and dinner.

Overnight: Big Tree Camp

Day 2: Big Tree Camp – Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: Approximately 2,780 m – 3,500 m
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest / Moorland

After breakfast, continue hiking through the forest.

As you gain altitude, the rainforest gradually changes into moorland, with shorter vegetation and wider views.

Continue toward the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic sections of the Lemosho Route.

Arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon and relax while enjoying views of the surrounding mountain landscape.

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: Approximately 3,500 m – 3,850 m
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Today’s hike takes you across the Shira Plateau.

The trail is relatively gradual, giving you time to enjoy the scenery and continue adapting to the increasing altitude.

The open landscape provides excellent views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding highlands when visibility is good.

Arrive at Shira 2 Camp and spend the afternoon resting.

Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Elevation: Approximately 3,850 m – 4,600 m – 3,960 m
Distance: Approximately 10–12 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert

Today is an important acclimatization day.

Begin hiking toward Lava Tower, gradually reaching approximately 4,600 metres.

The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and dry as you enter the alpine desert zone.

After spending some time around Lava Tower, descend toward Barranco Camp. This higher-altitude hike followed by descent helps your body adapt to the elevation.

Continue through the dramatic Barranco Valley and arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Elevation: Approximately 3,960 m – 4,035 m
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, begin the famous Barranco Wall.

Although the wall looks impressive from below, it does not require technical rock climbing. Your guide will assist you through the steeper sections.

After reaching the top, continue across the alpine landscape toward Karanga Valley.

Enjoy several short climbs and descents before arriving at Karanga Camp.

The afternoon is available for rest and preparation for the final stages of the climb.

Overnight: Karanga Camp

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Elevation: Approximately 4,035 m – 4,640 m
Distance: Approximately 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, continue toward Barafu Camp, the final high camp before the summit.

The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and barren as you gain altitude.

After arriving at Barafu Camp, have lunch and spend the afternoon resting.

Your guide will provide a summit briefing and check your equipment for the following day’s summit attempt.

Dinner is served early before you rest for several hours.

Overnight: Barafu Camp

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Summit Elevation: 5,895 m
Summit Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Descent Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Arctic

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek.

You will normally wake around midnight and begin the summit attempt in the darkness.

The trail climbs steadily toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The altitude, cold temperatures and steep terrain make this section demanding, so your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace.

After reaching Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

Once at the summit, take time to celebrate, take photographs and enjoy the incredible views.

After the summit, descend toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

Elevation: Approximately 3,100 m – 1,630 m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate.

The vegetation becomes greener as you lose elevation.

At Mweka Gate, complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro certificate if you successfully reached the relevant summit point.

Meet your driver and transfer back to Moshi.

Your 8-day Lemosho Route adventure ends with hotel drop-off in Moshi.
